FAQs
Questions about different types of flooring, recommended cleaning products and methods, and about design and installation are frequent. Here are our answers to a few of the most common questions, as well as guide to what to expect if Finney's will be installing your new floor. We hope this helps!

What to Expect: Before, After, and During Installation
Before Installation
  • Remove as many of your furnishings from the room as possible, especially delicate items.
  • New hardwood will need to acclimate in your home for at least two days before installation begins.
During Installation
  • Be prepared for some noise and disruption.
  • Know that all efforts will be made to minimize dust and debris, but some may occur.
  • Know that if we encounter unexpected damage or complications we will notify you to discuss options before doing anything.
After Installation
  • For all hard surfaces, we recommend using entry/exit mats to stop dirt at the door.
  • Avoid rubber backed rugs, as they may discolor hardwood, laminate, and vinyl.
  • Use felt pads on all furniture legs in hard surface areas to reduce dents and/or scratches. For rolling chairs use a small rug or plastic mat.
  • Avoid walking on hardwood with stiletto heals or cleats, as they may cause dents and/or scratches.
  • Seasonal humidity change may cause cracks between hardwood boards to appear and disappear, this is normal.
  • Last, but not least, use the cleaning product and method recommended for your floor.

How should I clean my new floor?
Vinyl Floors
  • Vinyl flooring, whether it is sheet vinyl or vinyl tile, should be cleaned with a vinegar and water solution (1/4 cup vinegar to 1 gallon water) on a damp mop. Steamers, such as the popular Shark brand, also work well on vinyl.
Laminate and Hardwood Floors
  • Hardwood and Laminate flooring should be cleaned with a dust mop for regular maintenance, and with a damp mop and hard surface cleaner to clean up spots and spills. We recommend Bruce Hard Surface Cleaner and BonaKemi's hard surface mop that comes with dusting and cleaning pads; we keep both in-stock.
Carpet
  • Carpet should be vacuumed regularly and professionally cleaned every 1 - 2 years to maintain your carpet's warranty. For spot cleaning we carry a spray cleaner that works very well, as well as a dry carpet cleaning kit.
Tile Floors
  • Ceramic and porcelain tile floors may be cleaned with a damp mop using the same vinegar and water solution (1/4 cup vinegar to 1 gallon water) as vinyl floors. Steamers also work well on tile.

What should I consider when choosing a new floor?
Factors such as room traffic, lighting, wall and furniture colors, and adjoining spaces will all come into play when choosing a new floor.
  • As a general rule, the flooring (or paint color) will appear to be lighter when you see the entire room finished. In other words, small samples appear to be darker than the entire finished product.
  • Consider how long you expect your new floor to last, this can make a large difference in what type of flooring you ultimately choose.
  • Strongly consider how much and what type of traffic the flooring in this room will receive. For instance: carpet will show traffic paths more easily, so it may not be the best choice for a very high traffic area, or you may decide to go with a better quality carpet so it can better withstand high traffic; Laminate is prone to water and moisture damage, so is typically not recommended for bathrooms, kitchens, or homes with pets that have frequent accidents indoors.
  • Everyone at Finney's Floor & Home Center is highly trained to help you answer these questions, and others, in determining what type of flooring would be best for you in your home.
